The objective of the project was to develop a joint high precision and harmonized geodetic reference systems (including coordinate, height and gravity system) in the border area of Estonia and Latvia, as well as the necessary geospatial data conversion models. The project was carried out in close cooperation between the Latvian and Estonian authorities. It included high accuracy field measurements (global positioning, levelling, gravimetric surveys, traversing), calculations and development of different transformation models. The aim was to provide precise, up-to-date and harmonized location-based data and services in border areas for public use, which greatly simplifies the development of various infrastructures and services. The usage of high precision transformation models is important in the decision-making process, transformation services developed will be presented in seminars and thus public knowledge about the use of correct transformation models will be increased.
Main activities, carried out in a joint project team that involves several working groups.
- Firstly, in order to achieve highly accurate and reliable results, the most up-to-date geodetic strategy will be used in the implementation of the project. The methodology to be developed includes the principles of geodetic data assessment, data processing and modelling of geodata transition surfaces.
- In the second step, for harmonization of the geodetic reference systems, common measurements in the border region will be performed. That includes measurements using techniques such as high-precision global positioning, relative gravity, high-precision levelling, as well as traversing and levelling in the Valka/ Valga region. Results of the measurement serve as the basis for detection of differences between Latvian and Estonian geodetic systems. Transition surfaces between Latvian and Estonian geodetic systems are then modelled based on differences detected by high-precision geodata.
- In the third step, project outcomes will be made available for a wider audience, free of charge, to be used as the basis for different kinds of infrastructure (road and railroad projects) and environmental projects in the border area (water management, waste management, agricultural projects etc).
